CyberPower replace battery light: what it means and which battery your model takes

· 7 min read

On a CyberPower UPS, the Replace Battery icon or light means the battery is worn out; on PFC Sinewave and AVRLCD3 models CyberPower adds a second cause, a battery that is not connected well. Check the wires, recharge, and if the indicator stays on or runtime stays short, replace the battery with the type CyberPower specifies for that model.

CyberPower’s manuals for the CP, OR and ST lines list a typical battery life of 3 to 6 years, depending on the number of discharge and recharge cycles. The same indicator on a unit inside that range is worth checking before buying a battery.

What the indicator means, model by model

  • PFC Sinewave (CP1350PFCLCD, CP1500PFCLCD) and CP1350AVRLCD3, CP1500AVRLCD3: the REPLACE BATTERY icon lights when the batteries are not connected well or are worn out.
  • Smart App Sinewave (PR1000LCD, PR1500LCD): the Replace Battery LED lights to remind you to replace the battery.
  • Online rack/tower (OL1000RTXL2U to OL3000RTXL2U): the status LED shows a fault or a battery that needs replacing, and the LCD warns that the battery will need replacing soon because of insufficient runtime.

For the beep that comes with it, see why a CyberPower UPS beeps.

Confirm before you buy

  1. Check the battery connections: a loose connector lights the same icon on PFC Sinewave and AVRLCD3 units.
  2. Recharge: leave the UPS plugged in. CyberPower’s troubleshooting tables give “battery not fully charged” as the first cause of short runtime, and the manuals say to charge a new UPS for at least 8 hours (16 hours on PR models).
  3. Run a self-test: on PFC Sinewave units it is in the setup menu (hold ENTER for 2 seconds, then Self Test, then YES), and it runs in line mode.
  4. If runtime is still short, the tables give the second cause: the battery is worn out.

Which battery each model takes

CyberPower’s manuals name the replacement battery and say to replace with the same number of that battery. The manuals warn of a risk of explosion if a battery is replaced by an incorrect type.

Some CP1500PFCLCD units take a different pack depending on the serial number prefix on the rating label: check it before ordering, using our CyberPower battery cross-reference. See all replacement batteries. On OL rack/tower units, the manual says the battery model number is on the front of the UPS; the ST manual gives no code, so ask us.

Replacing the battery: the PFC Sinewave procedure

CyberPower’s procedure for the CP1350PFCLCD and CP1500PFCLCD:

  1. Turn off and unplug all connected equipment.
  2. Turn the UPS off and unplug it from the AC power source.
  3. Turn the UPS on its side and remove the front panel retaining screws on the bottom.
  4. Slide the front panel off, remove the fixed stand from the upper battery and take the batteries out.
  5. Disconnect the wires from the old batteries, then connect the red (+) and black (-) wires to the same-colour connectors on the new upper and lower batteries.
  6. Put the batteries back, refit the stand, slide the cover back and tighten the screws.
  7. Recharge the UPS for 8 to 16 hours to fully charge the battery.

Use only new batteries and replace both at the same time.

On OL rack/tower units, the manual adds a last step: after installing new batteries, run a battery test from the LCD and reset the battery replacement date (Configuration, UPS Diagnostic, ResetReplaceBAT).

Recharge time after a new battery, by model

CyberPower’s specification tables give a typical recharge time from a total discharge; the PFC Sinewave procedure itself says 8 to 16 hours after a swap. Runtime is not complete until the battery has recharged.

Typical battery recharge time (CyberPower user manuals)
ModelTypical recharge time
CP1350PFCLCD, CP1500PFCLCD8 hours from total discharge under 100% load (8 to 16 hours after a swap)
CP850 to CP1500AVRLCD8 hours
CP1350AVRLCD3, CP1500AVRLCD38 hours to 90% capacity from total discharge
PR1000LCD, PR1500LCD3 hours in Quick Charge Mode, 8 hours in Eco Mode (the procedure says to recharge 16 hours after a swap)
OR1000LCDRM1U, OR1500LCDRM1U8 hours

Safety when handling the battery

  • Do not dispose of batteries in a fire: they may explode.
  • Do not open or damage a battery: the released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes, and may be toxic.
  • A battery can give an electric shock and a high short-circuit current, so remove watches, rings and other metal objects and use tools with insulated handles.
  • Use the battery type and count the manual specifies: the manuals warn of a risk of explosion with an incorrect type.

Storage, recharge and recycling

In storage, CyberPower says to recharge the battery every three months. Used batteries are hazardous waste: most retailers that sell lead-acid batteries collect them for recycling, as local regulations require.

When to call a technician

  • The indicator stays on with new, fully charged batteries correctly connected.
  • The battery case is swollen, leaking or hot.
  • The UPS is an online rack/tower model protecting servers, where a battery swap needs a planned window.
  • You are not sure of the battery code or the wiring order.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the replace battery light on my CyberPower UPS?

A worn-out battery; on PFC Sinewave and AVRLCD3 models CyberPower also lists a battery that is not connected well. Check the connection and recharge before replacing.

What battery does the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD use?

CyberPower’s manual names the RB1290X2 for the CP1500PFCLCD and the RB1270X2C for the CP1350PFCLCD. Some CP1500PFCLCD units take a different pack by serial number, so check the rating label before ordering.

How long do CyberPower UPS batteries last?

CyberPower’s manuals for the CP, OR and ST lines give a typical battery life of 3 to 6 years, depending on the number of discharge and recharge cycles.

How long should I charge a new CyberPower battery?

The PFC Sinewave procedure says to recharge for 8 to 16 hours after replacing the battery; a new UPS should charge at least 8 hours (16 hours for PR models).

Can I replace just one of the two batteries?

No. CyberPower says to use only new batteries and to replace both at the same time.
